In the early hours of Friday, October 4, 2024, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, thwarted an alleged attempt by Nigerian police officers to seize control of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) headquarters in a bid to disrupt the upcoming local government elections.

Reports indicate that around 1 a.m., police officers led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) tried to forcefully gain access to the RSIEC premises. Their objective, it was alleged, was to tamper with sensitive electoral materials meant for the local elections scheduled for Saturday.

The attempted break-in was halted by vigilant security personnel who immediately raised the alarm, alerting top officials of the Commission and government authorities.

In a swift response, Governor Fubara personally led a high-powered delegation comprising lawmakers from the National and State Assemblies, alongside key political figures, to secure the RSIEC facility and prevent further interference.

As of the time of this report, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and several other senior government officials were stationed at the RSIEC office to ensure that the premises remain secure.

They are committed to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that Saturday’s local government elections proceed without any hindrance.
