Jonathan: Rivers Politicians Must Not Derail Our Democracy

President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep concern over the escalating political tension in Rivers State warning that political actors in the state must not derail the country’s democracy.

In a statement released via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Jonathan called on all political actors to exercise caution, warning that the situation could have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s democracy and security in the Niger Delta region.

Describing elections as the “cornerstone of democracy,” Jonathan emphasized the critical role they play in legitimizing governance and renewing citizens’ faith in the political process.

He stressed that the responsibility to uphold democratic principles lies with all stakeholders, particularly state institutions such as security agencies, which he urged to refrain from actions that could incite violence or disrupt law and order.

“The political happenings in Rivers State in recent days are cause for serious concern for everyone, especially lovers of democracy and actors within the peace and security sector of our nation,” Jonathan remarked. “Every election is significant, whether at national or sub-national levels, as it counts as a gain and honor to democracy.”

Jonathan further highlighted the strategic importance of Rivers State as the gateway to the Niger Delta, warning that any breakdown of peace in the state could have grave security implications for the region as a whole. He urged political actors to prioritize national interest over personal ambitions, calling for circumspection and patriotism in their pursuit of political relevance.

In his note of caution, the former president also addressed the role of the judiciary, calling on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to curb the growing trend of conflicting court orders from concurrent jurisdictions. He cautioned that the judiciary’s reputation could be undermined if this issue is not addressed, which would, in turn, erode public confidence in democracy.

Jonathan drew parallels between the current political crisis in Rivers State and the infamous political turmoil in Nigeria’s Old Western Region, which led to widespread unrest. “The political situation in Rivers State mirrors our past,” he noted. “I, therefore, warn that Rivers should not be used as the crystal that will form the block that collapses our democracy.”

In conclusion, Jonathan urged all state institutions, especially the police and the judiciary, to remain impartial and prioritize the common good by promoting peace, justice, and equality.
