The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the immediate withdrawal of police personnel previously deployed to secure the 23 local government secretariats in Rivers State.

This decision follows recent political developments in the state and was announced in a statement on Monday by Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command.

According to the statement, the new Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mustapha, communicated the Inspector General’s order, emphasizing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to neutrality and the proper functioning of democratic institutions.

The statement reads, “The newly deployed State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mustapha, conveyed the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for the immediate withdrawal of all police personnel previously deployed to seal and safeguard the Local Government Secretariats in the state.”

It further highlighted that police officers would only be redeployed to the local government areas if there is a crisis or a breakdown of law and order. In such instances, emergency measures would be promptly taken to restore peace and normalcy.

The Rivers State Police Command reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining law and order across the state, reiterating that its officers will continue to act professionally and with impartiality in fulfilling their duties.

Residents and political stakeholders were urged to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation evolves.
