Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has ridiculed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its failure to secure victory in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike pointed out the PDP’s poor performance in a state traditionally seen as one of its strongholds, claiming the party barely managed to campaign.

“They couldn’t even do a campaign, they didn’t get 10%. That’s a PDP state,” Wike remarked, referencing the party’s dismal results in the presidential election, where it was unable to make a significant impact.

Wike’s comments followed criticism from PDP chieftain Austine Opara, who argued that the successful conduct of local government elections in Rivers, despite opposition, demonstrated that the people were tired of oppression. Wike, however, turned the tables on Opara and others, suggesting their efforts to rally support for the PDP during the 2023 presidential election were a failure.

The former Rivers State governor has been at odds with the Atiku-inclined section of the PDP since losing the party’s presidential ticket. Following the fallout, Wike decided to back Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), instead of PDP’s flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar. His support for Tinubu was instrumental in delivering Rivers State to the APC, contributing to Tinubu’s victory in the national polls.

Despite being accused of anti-party activities, Wike has remained unapologetic. He defended his decision to support Tinubu on the grounds of fairness, equity, and justice, while still supporting the PDP in other elections in Rivers State.

Wike also dismissed calls for his suspension from the PDP, insisting that his actions were not anti-party. “Today people say ‘discipline Wike, he did anti-party.’ No, I did not do anti-party,” he argued. He further emphasized that he has no regrets for his role in the presidential election, adding, “I have no apologies because I don’t believe in injustice.”

Despite serving in Tinubu’s cabinet as FCT Minister, Wike remains a member of the PDP, a position that continues to generate debate within political circles.
