NCC In Strategic Moves To Boost Mobile Connectivity In Nigeria
By Benjamin Abioye
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been at the forefront of advancing mobile connectivity and internet services in Nigeria, and its latest move aims to unlock the potential of the 6GHz spectrum band.
This initiative follows global calls for governments to allocate the 6GHz spectrum for mobile use, as it is seen as a crucial asset for the future of mobile networks.
According to Adebayo, a key industry stakeholder, the 6GHz spectrum is essential for mobile operators to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet. He emphasized that operators must upgrade their equipment to fully utilize the band, but this would require government intervention to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place. “The government must step in to help operators deploy the needed equipment to take full advantage of the 6GHz band,” Adebayo said, underscoring the importance of this development.
The GSMA, a global organization representing mobile network operators, also highlighted the economic potential of the 6GHz band. The group believes that its allocation would not only address the rising demand for mobile data but also contribute to overall economic growth.
The 6GHz spectrum, when fully integrated into mobile networks, can help expand the capacity of existing infrastructure, enabling mobile operators to offer more cost-effective services while supporting advanced technologies like 5G and beyond.
The NCC’s push to open the 6GHz spectrum is expected to play a key role in improving internet speeds and network reliability across Nigeria. This move is expected to support the country’s digital transformation and help prepare the nation for future technological advancements. As Nigeria continues to embrace new technological solutions, the NCC’s commitment to improving mobile services and internet access remains crucial in enabling progress.
At a recent Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies hosted by the NCC in Lagos, several leaders gathered to discuss the implications of such technological advancements. Among them were Gbolahan Awonuga, Executive Secretary of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, Professor Caroline Alenoghena from the Federal University of Technology in Minna, Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner for Technical Services at NCC, Sade Dada, Public Policy Manager at Meta for Anglophone West Africa, Efosa Idehen, Director of Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement at NCC, and Tony Emoekpere, President of the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria. The forum aimed to explore the future of mobile connectivity and the role of the 6GHz spectrum in shaping it.
