Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has appointed Chidimma Adetshina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, as the state’s ambassador.

The appointment of Chidimma Adetshina as the state’s ambassador was made on Thursday during a visit by the South African-born Nigerian model and her father, Okechukwu Onwe, to the Government House in Enugu.

Governor Mbah lauded Chidimma Adetshina for her resilience and unwavering determination, describing her as a “true representation of the people of Enugu.” He praised her ability to overcome adversity and highlighted how her story embodies the grit and perseverance that the people of Enugu are known for.

“Your journey is inspiring,” Mbah said. “Despite the obstacles and attempts to bring you down, you stood firm and proved yourself to be a true daughter of Enugu. Your strength and resilience make you a role model for our youth, particularly young girls.”

The governor emphasized the importance of Chidimma’s influence in motivating the younger generation in the state, urging her to use her platform to inspire others, especially by sharing her story of perseverance and triumph.

Governor Mbah also assured Chidimma of the state’s full support as she prepares to represent Nigeria at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Mexico. He encouraged her to continue being a positive influence, using her experiences to mentor and uplift others.

In response, Chidimma Adetshina expressed her gratitude to the people of Enugu for their warm reception and support. “I believe my story has the power to inspire not just in Nigeria but globally,” she said. “Many young people can relate to my challenges and learn from my journey.”

Chidimma was born in Soweto, South Africa, in 2001 to a Nigerian father from Enugu and a Mozambican-born mother. Earlier this year, she faced controversy during her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant, where her nationality became a point of contention. After the South African Department of Home Affairs accused her mother of fraud and identity theft, Chidimma withdrew from the competition, maintaining her innocence and denying all allegations.

Undeterred, Chidimma entered the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where she emerged victorious on August 14, 2023. Despite facing criticism and accusations that her win was based on “pity,” she defended her title, stating that she earned her victory through hard work and determination.

As Enugu State’s newly appointed ambassador, Chidimma is expected to engage with and inspire young people across the state, standing as a symbol of resilience, courage, and the power of perseverance.
