My Husband Not To Blame For Hardship – Oluremi Tinubu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, has defended her husband amidst rising criticism over Nigeria’s current economic situation and hardship in the land.

Speaking during a visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Thursday, Senator Oluremi Tinubu said that her husband should not be held responsible for the hardship Nigerians are currently experiencing.

The removal of fuel subsidy by President Tinubu shortly after his inauguration on May 29, 2023, has led to a significant increase in the price of petrol, jumping from N198 to N1,030 per litre. This decision, while intended to foster economic growth, has left many Nigerians struggling under the weight of inflation and increased living costs.

Addressing the issue, Senator Oluremi Tinubu noted that the administration is still in its early stages and is working towards resolving the crisis and urged Nigerians to wait on her husband to ease the hardship they are facing.

“We are just two years into our administration,” she said. “We are not the cause of the current situation. We are trying to fix it and secure the future. We know that subsidy has been removed, but with God on our side, in the next two years, Nigeria will be greater than this.”

She further explained that previous administrations had attempted to remove the fuel subsidy but were unable to see it through, expressing hope that the current government, with public prayers and support, will succeed in building a stronger nation.

In her speech at the Palace of the Ooni of Ife, the First Lady also praised her husband’s integrity, emphasizing that neither she nor President Tinubu are driven by greed.

“We give glory to God for our status. Myself and my husband, we are not greedy, but we thank God for what He has done for us. It is not common for rich people to get to this seat, but I am grateful to God. We cannot disappoint Nigeria, and with the help of God, we will get to the promised land in no distant time,” she stated.

As part of her visit to Ife, Senator Tinubu inaugurated a hostel and a 2.7-kilometre road donated by the Ooni of Ife to Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ University (OAU), Ile Ife, naming the road in her honor. During the event, she also pledged N1 billion to support the university’s development.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, commended the First Lady for her continued service to Nigeria and praised her for being a role model since her days as the First Lady of Lagos State. He highlighted her impactful New Era Initiative and its popular “One Day Governor” program in Lagos, which provided young students from various backgrounds with the opportunity to serve as governor for a day.

The monarch described the initiative as an inspiration for many young Nigerians to aspire for leadership roles and lauded Senator Tinubu for her contribution to the nation.
