The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as its new Acting National Chairman, following the suspension of Amb. Illiya Damagum by a faction within the party.

The appointment of a new national chairman for the PDP was confirmed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in an official statement on Friday.

Official Statement:

APPOINTMENT OF YAYARI AHMED MOHAMMED AS PDP ACTING NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

“In the wake of the suspension of His Excellency, Amb. Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman,” the statement read.

Ologunagba emphasized that the appointment takes immediate effect, in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017). The NWC urged all party organs, leaders, and stakeholders to remain united and focused, as the party prepares for its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024.

However, in a parallel legal development to the appointment of a new national chairman for the PDP, the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a restraining order preventing the PDP’s NEC and Board of Trustees (BoT) from removing Damagum from his role as Acting National Chairman.

Justice Peter Lifu, in his ruling, referenced Articles 42, 47, and 67 of the PDP Constitution, stressing that national officers can only be elected or replaced at the party’s national convention. As such, any attempt to replace Damagum outside of this procedure would be a violation of the party’s constitution.

This judicial intervention adds further complexity to the already tumultuous leadership crisis within the PDP, as the party’s factions continue to wrestle for control ahead of the forthcoming national convention.
