Rivers Crisis: How Chairman Pulled Down Wike’s Name From Council Secretariat (Video)

As the ongoing Rivers crisis intensify, the chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area (LGA), Chijioke Ihunwo, has removed Wike’s name from the council’s administrative block.

The removal, which took place on Sunday morning, comes amidst an ongoing supremacy battle between the two political heavyweights- Fubara and Wike, over control of the state’s political structures. Wike, who now serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), hails from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor LGA and previously had his name displayed prominently on the administrative block of the council secretariat.

In a surprising development, Wike’s name has been replaced with that of Obi Wali, a revered politician and activist from Rivers State who passed away in 1993. Ihunwo, who shared videos of the removal process on X (formerly Twitter), did not provide an official reason for the change but the timing suggests it is connected to the ongoing Rivers crisis between the two leaders.

The feud between Wike and Fubara has intensified in recent months, as both camps vie for dominance within the state’s political landscape. Fubara, once seen as Wike’s loyalist, has since distanced himself from his predecessor, with the rivalry culminating in the recent local government elections.

Weeks before the elections, loyalists of Governor Fubara defected to the Action Peoples Party (APP), securing 22 of the 23 chairmanship seats in the state. The move was widely seen as a strategic attempt to weaken Wike’s influence in Rivers politics.

The removal of Wike’s name from the council block adds yet another layer to the political crisis brewing in Rivers State, as both leaders continue to assert their authority over the state’s political future. The symbolic gesture of replacing Wike’s name with that of Obi Wali, a figure respected for his activism, is seen by many as a significant statement in the ongoing power struggle.
