PDP Challenges Edo Governorship Election Results At Tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the 2024 Edo State governorship elections, Asue Ighodalo, have filed a petition at the election tribunal.

This petition challenges the election results that were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP chairman in Edo State, shared this information on Monday.

During a press briefing in Benin, the capital of Edo State, Aziegbemi said the PDP is determined to reclaim what it believes is its rightful win. He expressed confidence that the tribunal will overturn the results declared by INEC on September 21.

He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating the election results and of trying to block the PDP’s access to inspect election materials at INEC’s office in Aduwawa.

Aziegbemi stated, “We have begun the journey to reclaim the people’s mandate and a petition has been filed before the Edo State Election Tribunal. Against all odds, the petition has been filed as APC’s plan is for us not to successfully file the petition. The mandate given to PDP will be reclaimed.” He added that the PDP has identified the problems with the election and believes that the tribunal will rule in its favor due to the strong evidence presented.

He also accused the APC and its chairman, Jarret Tenebe, of spreading false information to distract from their actions. According to Aziegbemi, while the PDP was focused on gathering evidence, the APC was busy making false claims. He said, “APC and its chairman, Jarret Tenebe, were busy peddling lies. He lied that the PDP is disrupting activities in the INEC office, forgetting that the process is in the interest of the PDP. Why should PDP now be the party to disrupt the exercise that is in its favour?”

Aziegbemi further questioned the APC’s behavior, saying, “If APC truly won the September 21st governorship election in Edo State, why are they causing confusion and problems in the INEC office? They lie without thinking it through.” He accused the APC of disrupting the election inspection process and raised doubts about why they would resist the inspection if they had won fairly.

Aziegbemi also mentioned a letter he sent to INEC’s national headquarters regarding their powers under the Electoral Act. He said INEC’s response was surprising, explaining that the section he referenced only applies to internal use within INEC, not for political parties or candidates.

Additionally, Aziegbemi claimed that some PDP members were arrested by the police during the election period and were forced to pay ₦64 million for their release. He described this as an attempt to weaken the PDP’s efforts and announced plans to provide regular updates on political events in Edo State.

Speaking on the matter, Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, the Director General of the Edo State PDP Governorship Campaign Council, emphasized the importance of democracy. He said, “Democracy gives us the constitutional right to vote for who will lead us, and that constitutional right can’t be denied Edo people; that is why we have taken steps to pursue our case to a logical conclusion.”
