Tinubu Weighs In On Super Eagles’ Treatment In Libya

President Bola Tinubu has officially welcomed the Super Eagles back to Nigeria after their difficult experience in Libya.

The news was shared in a statement on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed the players’ safe return.

In the statement, President Tinubu described the treatment of the Super Eagles in Libya as “unsportsmanlike and inhumane.” He stressed the need for joint efforts to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.

The President expressed his expectation that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) would launch a full investigation into the situation and take action against those responsible for violating the organisation’s Statutes and Regulations.

He praised the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development for their prompt and effective coordination in resolving the situation and ensuring the safe return of the players.

The statement read: “President Bola Tinubu, deeply moved by the inhuman treatment endured by the Super Eagles of Nigeria at a Libyan airport, warmly welcomes their safe return to Nigeria.”

It continued, “The harrowing experience of the national football team at the hands of their hosts and the Libyan authorities prompted the Nigerian Football Federation to withdraw the Super Eagles from the scheduled match on Tuesday.”

The President also commended the resilience of the players, recognizing their ability to keep their spirits high despite the challenging ordeal. He emphasized the unifying power of football, noting that the treatment of the Nigerian team went against the spirit of the game.

“President Tinubu applauds the players for keeping their spirit alive despite the excruciating ordeal in Libya,” the statement added. He concluded by urging football lovers and sports administrators to work together to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
