Aggrieved youths in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, have allegedly burned down the local police station and lynched suspected kidnappers in a violent response to the recent abduction and murder of a young man from their community.

The unrest began after the young man was kidnapped, and despite a ransom being paid, the kidnappers went ahead and killed him.

In an attempt to seek justice, the community managed to trace the mobile phone of the deceased, which was still in use by the kidnappers, to a Fulani settlement in the area. The suspects were apprehended and handed over to the police for investigation.

However, frustration grew when the police appeared to take no significant action against the suspects. Furious with the perceived inaction, the community youths stormed the police station, demanding that the suspects be handed back to them. Tensions escalated when the police refused, leading to a chaotic confrontation in which a youth was shot and killed by officers.

This incident triggered the burning of the police station, as officers fled the scene to avoid the mob’s wrath. The enraged youths then retrieved the Fulani suspects from custody, and several of them were killed on the spot.

One of the prime suspects reportedly led the youths to a shallow grave where the body of the kidnapped youth was buried. Further investigation revealed additional mutilated and decomposing bodies, and the suspect confessed to being involved in the murders of several other victims during their time in the community.

The decomposing remains of the murdered youth were transported back to the main community, deepening the sorrow and anger that had fueled the violent actions of the locals.
