The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has declared the seats of Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and three other pro-Fubara lawmakers vacant.

This decision to declare the seats of the Rivers assembly members vacant was made due to their absence from legislative sessions for 152 consecutive days.

During a plenary on Tuesday, Amaewhule explained that Ehie failed to formally inform the House of his new position, leading to the declaration of his seat as vacant.

The Assembly also voted on the cases of Victor Oko-Jumbo and two other lawmakers, confirming that their extended absenteeism without approval violated the 1999 Constitution.

Following these decisions, to the decalre the seats of the assembly members vacant, the Rivers House also resolved to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the development. The move will allow the electoral body to hold elections within 90 days to fill the vacant seats in the Rivers Assembly.

In addition, the Assembly granted Governor Fubara another chance to present the 2024 Appropriations Bill after the Appeal Court nullified the ₦800 billion budget previously submitted to a parallel House led by Edison Ehie.

This development highlights ongoing political tensions in the Rivers State Assembly, raising concerns about governance and representation in the state.
