Nigerian Senate Demands Apology From Libya After Super Eagles’ Mistreatment

The Nigerian Senate has urgently called for an apology from the Libyan government after the national football team, the Super Eagles, experienced mistreatment upon their arrival for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The Senate condemned the behavior of Libyan officials, describing it as disgraceful and a serious violation of human dignity, as well as a failure to adhere to international standards.

Additionally, the Senate has demanded a thorough investigation into this troubling incident.

This resolution arose from a point of order presented by Senator Sumaila Kawu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, who invoked Order 42 of the Senate Standing Rules for a personal explanation.

During the session, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, from Kano North, criticized the treatment of the Super Eagles in Libya, calling it unacceptable and contrary to the values of sports.

Senator Jibrin stated, “The matter was brought under Personal Explanation by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila (Kano South). What happened to the Super Eagles in Libya does not align with the spirit of sports. The essence of sports is to promote unity, competition, and brotherhood among nations on the continent. The way our players were treated is terrible and condemnable.”

He continued, “Fortunately, you (Kawu) have come forward with a personal explanation, which is exactly what we wanted to avoid a diplomatic conflict. We believe this was a mistake, and the Libyan government should be given the opportunity to correct it and apologize to the Nigerian government.”

Senator Jibrin emphasized Nigeria’s prominent role in Africa, stating, “Nigeria is a big country in Africa. We always lead in terms of diplomacy and friendship. Based on that spirit, I am sure you decided that this matter should be handled in a way that allows their leaders to apologize to our national team.”

He concluded by urging the Libyan ambassador and relevant authorities to formally apologize for their treatment of the Super Eagles. “I thank the Chairman of the Sports Committee for bringing this matter to our attention. You have shown that you are diligent in your responsibilities.”
