PDP Crisis: Damagum Defends Arrest Order On Factional National Chairman

The internal power struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn for the worse with the Umar Illiya Damagum faction justifying the arrest order on factional chairman, Ahmed Yayari Mohammed.

This move follows accusations that Mohammed’s faction violated a subsisting court order regarding their legitimacy and actions within the PDP party.

Tensions escalated after Damagum suspended key PDP officers, including National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, citing their involvement in alleged anti-party activities tied to the ongoing crisis within the Rivers State PDP chapter

In response, the Ahmed Yayari Mohammed-led faction retaliated by suspending Damagum and PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, accusing them of undermining the party’s interests in legal matters involving the Rivers State chapter.

The tit-for-tat suspensions have further deepened the rift in the PDP, with both sides claiming legitimacy.

Damagum’s faction, through Acting National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi Manga, condemned the actions of Mohammed’s camp, calling them unconstitutional and a clear violation of a court ruling. Speaking at a press conference, Manga stated that the PDP had no choice but to involve security agencies to uphold the court’s decision and restore order within the party.

Manga also emphasized that the Damagum-led leadership was acting in full accordance with the decisions made during the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on October 10, 2024. He criticized the opposing faction for disregarding party regulations and warned that their actions could lead to serious legal consequences.

“We urge all our party members to remain focused and continue supporting the PDP leadership under the Acting National Chairman, H.E. Amb Umar Iliya Damagum, until we achieve a lasting solution to our issues,” Manga said.

He further expressed disappointment in the Mohammed-led faction’s response to the suspensions, stating that both Ologunagba and Ajibade, as senior lawyers, should have respected the PDP’s decision and taken advantage of the opportunity for reconciliation rather than escalating the crisis.

Manga also warned that their approach, which he described as a “motor park” style, could damage the party’s reputation. “While we are aware of the drummers, the masquerades should have been more mindful of their dance steps to avoid exposing themselves on stage,” he concluded.

As the PDP’s internal crisis continues to unfold, members are urged to remain united in the hope of finding a lasting resolution to the crisis that has thrown up a faction to the national leadeership.
