Akpabio Denies Impeachment Rumors As ‘Fake News’
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed claims of an impeachment plot against him by unnamed “aggrieved Senators.” He described these reports as “mischief” and “fake news.”
Akpabio addressed the situation during the Senate plenary on Wednesday afternoon. He instructed the Senate Committee on Special Duties to investigate the origins and promoters of the rumor and to provide a report back to the Senate within 24 hours for further action.
“We are here sitting down and doing our work very peacefully, oblivious to the mischief happening behind us. I think we should refer this to the Police Affairs. The fake news is hereby referred to the Committee of Special Duties to report back to the Senate in 24 hours,” Akpabio stated.
He further explained, “That is part of what we go through daily; it’s either they use AI to inject something to turn it around in order to drive traffic. I understand that they are paid by YouTube if they generate a lot of traffic, so whoever released this fake news must be receiving payments due to the traffic. I hope the public understands that this is total fake news and that the chamber is very stable. The issue of impeachment does not arise,” Akpabio added, eliciting laughter from those present.
On the same day, online reports indicated that the National Assembly complex resembled a war zone, as operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) were seen securing the area amid speculation about an impeachment move against Akpabio by some unnamed Northern Senators.
