Messi Matches Ronaldo’s Record With Hat Trick
Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s international record by scoring a hat trick in Argentina’s 6-0 triumph over Bolivia during a 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Messi, who captains the national team, not only netted three goals but also provided two assists during the match.
This stellar performance marks Messi’s 10th international hat trick, matching the achievement of his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has also scored ten hat tricks for the Portugal national team.
Under Messi’s leadership, Argentina currently holds a strong position in the South American qualifiers, leading the group by three points ahead of second-placed Colombia and six points above their arch-rivals, Brazil. This solid standing places Argentina in a favorable position to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
In contrast, Ronaldo faced a frustrating evening as Portugal settled for a goalless draw against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League. The star player, currently with the Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, was visibly upset with the match’s outcome and reportedly expressed his frustration towards the referee for ending the game just as Portugal was preparing to take a corner kick.
