Former President Goodluck Jonathan, has advised the judiciary to avoid making decisions that could harm the country’s democracy. He expressed his concerns at an event to mark the 67th birthday of Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

Jonathan said he was troubled by recent political rulings from various courts in Nigeria. He specifically criticized a Supreme Court ruling that allows a ward chairman of a political party to suspend the National Chairman of a party.

He noted that this decision has contributed to the current crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and had previously caused problems for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jonathan compared such court decisions to turning a cone upside down, which makes it unstable and prone to falling. He explained, “When a cone is turned upside down, it cannot stand because any little thing that touches it will fall.” He said that such judgements could destabilize the country’s democracy.

He further argued that allowing a subordinate, like a Ward Chairman, to suspend a National Chairman goes against the principles of justice. “You cannot tell me that the head of a department can expel the vice chancellor,” Jonathan remarked.

He pointed out that since the Supreme Court’s ruling, it has caused instability, saying, “The PDP is in crisis today because of that judgement. The APC also faced the same problem at a time.” Jonathan urged the Supreme Court to reconsider the ruling, stating, “Look at how other nations work; I have never seen where the sub-unit disciplines the principal. I am therefore pleading with the Supreme Court to review that judgement because it had turned the cone upside down.”

Jonathan’s remarks came after former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was the event’s Chairman, invited him to the stage. Obasanjo, while making his own comments, brought Jonathan along and announced him as co-chairman of the event.
