Igbo Muslim Becomes Imam Of Abuja National Mosque

Professor Iliyasu Usman, an Igbo man, has been named Imam of the Abuja National Mosque.

He delivered his first khutbah (sermon) during the Jumm’at prayer on Friday, October 18, 2024, marking a significant event for the Muslim community in Nigeria.

This appointment is being celebrated widely, especially by the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), which sees it as a testament to Usman’s commitment to Islamic education and leadership.

In a statement, SEMON praised the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), headed by President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for demonstrating inclusivity in this decision. The organization emphasized that Usman’s appointment is not just a personal honor but also a sacred duty to lead the Muslim community in worship and serve Allah.

SEMON expressed hope that Usman’s leadership would strengthen the Igbo Muslim community and foster unity within the larger Nigerian Muslim population.
