Police Speak On Viral Video of Man Chased Into Canal
The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral claim that a man was chased by police officers into a canal at the Federal bus stop, Ipaja-Ayobo axis
The chase of the man into a canal by the Lagos police officers reportedly left the man unconscious.
The incident, which surfaced on social media, triggered public outcry after the narrator alleged that police officers in mufti pursued the man, accused him of being a “yahoo boy” due to his tattoos, and threatened him with guns, resulting in his fall into the canal.
In response to the viral video and the outcry that followed, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin, addressed the matter on X (formerly Twitter).
He stated that the police have yet to receive an official report on the incident but are actively investigating the situation.
“Since we saw this video, we have been making concerted efforts to verify this claim, but nothing has turned up yet. We have checked our records, and no report has been made till now of this incident that the narrator explained happened yesterday,” Hundeyin wrote.
Despite the lack of a formal report, Hundeyin assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and the Area Commander responsible for the region is personally overseeing the inquiry. He urged anyone with additional or useful information to reach out to the police and promised to keep the public updated on their findings.
The man in question is reportedly in critical condition at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), suffering from a severe head injury and requiring oxygen after reportedly being chased into the canal by police in Lagos.
