2027: Makinde Clarifies Reports On Challenging Tinubu
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed to declare his position on any 2027 political plan independent of the influence of outsiders.
Makinde made the assertion against the background of reports that he had declared to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde dismissed these rumors as baseless and unnecessary, stating that he will discuss his political future when the time is right.
He spoke at an event at Fashola Farm in Oyo where he emphasized his independence and commitment to his own political agenda.
“We didn’t do this (Host PDP reporters’ retreat) because somebody has a presidential ambition. No comment, nothing. But all I can say to you is, I’m old enough if I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do. So, no speculation, nobody can push my agenda. I will push my agenda when the time comes,” he said, addressing the speculation about his ambitions.
The governor reflected on his political journey, which has included challenges and achievements. He highlighted that his election as governor was purely based on the will of the people of Oyo State, without the influence of political leaders or major sponsors.
“Oyo State people took a decision in 2019. We did not have a godfather. Nobody sponsored me, nobody gave me a dime for us to get in here but the people of Oyo State decided, we wanted to give this opportunity to an outsider,” Makinde explained. He noted that despite two unsuccessful attempts to win a Senate seat, the people chose him, stating, “I wanted to convince the people.”
He mentioned that when he ran, all six states in the Southwest were under APC control, but Oyo State chose to be different. Makinde shared that he presented a detailed plan called the “Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023,” asking the people to hold him accountable.
Additionally, the governor expressed concerns about Nigeria potentially becoming a one-party state. He emphasized the importance of a multi-party system for allowing diverse leadership and showcasing talents from different backgrounds. “Nigeria must not slide into a one-party state so that others will have the opportunity to showcase their talents,” Makinde stated, reaffirming his commitment to a competitive political environment.
