Seyi Law Praises Tinubu For Ending Fuel Subsidy

Nigerian comedian Oluwaseyitan Aletile, widely known as Seyi Law, has praised President Bola Tinubu for ending the fuel subsidy. During his inaugural speech, President Tinubu stated that “fuel subsidy is gone,” emphasizing that the government could no longer afford to maintain this longstanding practice of subsidizing petrol, officially called Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS).

The removal of the subsidy has had a significant impact on Nigerians, leading to a sharp increase in the prices of goods and services. Despite the hardships this decision has caused, Seyi Law believes it will ultimately benefit the country in the long run. He expressed that the subsidy should have been eliminated much earlier.

Reflecting on the past, Seyi Law mentioned that if the subsidy had been removed in 2012, during Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency, Nigeria would have avoided much of the current financial strain. He noted that the former opposition party, led by Tinubu, had protested against the subsidy at that time.

“Fuel subsidy should have been long gone. If it had gone in 2012, we would have gone through the pain process, and by now, we would have been healing,” he said.

He recalled being the only celebrity to publicly oppose the anti-fuel subsidy movement in 2012, mentioning that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the former Minister of Finance, had stated that Nigeria could not afford to pay salaries at that time. “We were borrowing to pay salaries,” Seyi Law quoted her as saying, highlighting the financial challenges faced by the country.
