Former powerful lawmaker, Farouk Lawan has expressed his gratitude to be alive and in good health after spending his five year sentence for bribery in Kuje Prison.

The former lawmaker was released on Tuesday morning and was received by friends and family. He promptly drove himself away to his Abuja home from where he was received by other family members.

He was videoed collecting the money following a sting operation mounted by the Department of State Services, DSS following a complaint made by Otedola.

As a member of the Fourth House he was pivotal to the impeachment threat levelled against President Olusegun Obasanjo, in the Fifth House,  he was one of the influential lawmakers being Speaker Aminu Masari and was chairman of the House Committee on Education. In the Sixth House he was one of the lawmakers who brought down Speaker Patricia Etteh and enthroned Dimeji Bankole as her replacement.

He was repeatedly mentioned in the speakership race but never had the opportunity to ever hit the gavel before he was indicted in the oil subsidy probe scandal.

Following his release on Tuesday morning from Kuje Prison, Farouk Lawan said:

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial.

My gratitude is deep, I’m alive and in good health and high spirits to be with my family, friends and associates. I don’t take that for granted.

I remain grateful and indebted to my family and friends who stood by me through this particularly trying phase of my life.

May Allah SWT bless you🙏
