Glasgow Named Host For 2026 Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, Scotland, has been officially announced as the host for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Scottish city will hold a smaller version of the multi-sport event.

The future of the 2026 Games was uncertain after the Australian state of Victoria, the original host, dropped out last year due to rising costs.

Last month, the Scottish government gave its approval for Glasgow to host the event. On Tuesday, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed that Glasgow, which hosted the Games in 2014, will now stage the next edition from July 23 to August 2, 2026. This upcoming event will have only 10 sports, a reduction from the 19 sports featured at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, England.

Para sports will be fully included in the Games, which is a key priority. Six Para sports will be part of the program. The sports schedule will consist of athletics and Para-athletics, swimming and Para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, and Para track cycling. Other sports include netball, weightlifting and Para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and Para bowls, as well as 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

The CGF stated that the Glasgow 2026 Games will bring over £100 million ($130 million) in investments to the city and is expected to generate more than £150 million in economic value for the region. “On behalf of the entire Commonwealth sport movement, we are delighted to officially confirm that the 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in the host city of Glasgow,” said CGF chief executive Katie Sadleir.

Britain and Australia have hosted five of the last six editions of the Games. Sadleir believes that this smaller model will allow more countries to host future Games. “The 2026 Games will be a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow,” she added. “It’s an exciting first step in our journey to reset and redefine the Games as a truly collaborative, flexible, and sustainable model for the future that minimizes costs, reduces the environmental footprint, and enhances social impact — in doing so increasing the scope of countries capable of hosting.”

The CGF emphasized that public funding will not be necessary to organize the Glasgow Games, with Australia covering part of the expenses after Victoria’s withdrawal. Victoria exited the hosting due to an estimated cost of over A$6 billion (£3.13 billion, $4.09 billion).

The Commonwealth Games occur every four years and originated from the British Empire Games, still involving mostly countries that were once part of the British Empire.
