Nigerian Policeman Draws Social Media Criticism Over Earring Response

A heated debate has erupted on social media after popular influencer, Daniel Regha, called out SP Bright Edafe, a senior Nigerian police officer, for sporting an earring in public.

Regha shared a photo of Bright Edafe on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, criticizing the officer for a look he deemed unbefitting of a high-ranking law enforcement official.

Regha’s post read: “A married policeman, an SP for that matter, is wearing earring(s), but if a youth is seen doing the same, they will be stopped, probably questioned, and likely harassed. In terms of physical appearance, you’re OK, but this is not a look befitting of a Nigerian police officer. Stick to the airpods and glasses, that’s more than enough. No offense.”

To the surprise of many Bright Edafe swiftly dismissed Regha with a blunt remark, writing, “Abeg getat.”

The officer’s dismissive reply has since set the social media abuzz, with many netizens criticizing him for not setting a good example as a police officer. Commenters pointed out the double standards, accusing Edafe of practicing the very hypocrisy that ordinary Nigerians often face. Several users remarked that if a young man had been seen dressed similarly, he would likely have been profiled as a “Yahoo boy” or subjected to police harassment.

“It’s funny how he gets to wear earrings as a law enforcement officer, but ordinary citizens get harassed for much less,” one user commented, reflecting the frustration of many.

Some netizens questioned why certain standards seemed to apply to citizens, but not to those entrusted with upholding the law.
