CAN Fumes Over New Tax On Church Signboards

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has criticized Abia State Governor Alex Otti for imposing a new tax on church signboards across the state.

The decision has sparked backlash among religious leaders, with CAN warning that the policy could be seen as targeting the Christian community.

Reports indicate that Abia is the only state in Nigeria to introduce such a levy on religious signposts. In a letter addressed to the governor, the state CAN chapter expressed deep concern over the move. The letter, signed by CAN Chairman Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and Secretary Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, urged the state government to reconsider the taxation policy.

“We passionately plead with Your Excellency to urgently review this matter and potentially reverse the policy to avoid giving the impression that this administration is anti-church,” the letter read.

CAN also proposed a roundtable discussion between the government and Christian leaders to reach an amicable resolution on the matter. The religious body stressed the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration to maintain harmony in the state.

As the controversy continues to brew, Governor Otti has yet to officially respond to the concerns raised by the state’s religious leaders.
