PDP Shifts The Evil Day, Reschedules NEC Meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, originally scheduled for October 24, to November 28, 2024.

This decision was made after a lengthy four-hour meeting among PDP governors and stakeholders on Tuesday night.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, addressed journalists at the end of the meeting held at the Bauchi Governors’ Lodge in Asokoro, explaining the reason behind the postponement. He stated that the shift in date was aimed at giving the party enough time to focus on the upcoming Ondo State Governorship election set for November 16.

Governor Mohammed emphasized, “The postponement allows us to unite and build the strength needed to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo.” He also urged party members to avoid divisive comments and work together to strengthen the PDP, especially as the party prepares to reclaim power in the 2027 elections.

The meeting was attended by key party organs, including the PDP Governors’ Forum, Board of Trustees, National Working Committee (NWC), and the National Assembly leadership.

In another development, there are growing efforts within the PDP to extend the tenure of the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. Although it was previously agreed that Damagum would step down at the NEC meeting, sources now report that some party members, led by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State are pushing for Damagum to remain in office until after the Ondo governorship election. This move, referred to as a “soft landing,” aims to allow him to resign voluntarily after the election.

Supporters of Damagum believe this approach will help maintain party stability and give the North Central zone more time to nominate a suitable successor.
