BREAKING: Nigeria Air Crash Claims Lives
Tragedy struck in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday as a helicopter crash claimed three lives.
The incident occurred around 11:22 a.m. along the Port Harcourt waterways when the aircraft, a Sikorsky SK76 with registration 5NBQG, operated by East Wind Aviation, was on its way from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the Nuimantan oil rig.
According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Odutayo Oluseyi, eight people were onboard the ill-fated flight. The helicopter reportedly went down near Bonny Finima in the Atlantic Ocean, prompting an immediate activation of rescue operations.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and nearby aerodromes had been alerted, with rescue efforts underway. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other key agencies have joined forces to locate potential survivors and recover those affected.
“Although no Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal was received, manual efforts to identify the crash site are ongoing. All available resources, including military and low-flying aircraft, have been deployed to assist in locating and rescuing any survivors,” the ministry noted. So far, three bodies have been recovered.
Authorities extended their condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that further updates would be provided as the search and rescue mission continues.
