Goodluck Jonathan Set For Key AU Role In Botswana
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will be traveling to Gaborone, Botswana, on Friday to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the country’s general elections, set for October 30, 2024.
This information was confirmed through a statement from his Special Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze.
Jonathan, known for his commitment to advancing democracy in Africa, will lead a team with a wide range of members. The team includes representatives from the African Union Permanent Representative Committee, Pan African Parliament (PAP), African Governance Platform, election management bodies, independent election experts, and members of civil society, including women and youth organizations.
While in Gaborone, Jonathan is expected to meet with key figures from Botswana’s leadership, political parties, civil society groups, media, and the diplomatic community. His focus will be on promoting a fair, transparent, and peaceful election environment before, during, and after the election.
In a letter to Jonathan, Moussa Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, praised him for his “pan-African credentials and solid commitment to democracy and credible electoral processes in Africa,” which made him an ideal choice to lead this mission.
This year’s general election in Botswana will be the 13th since the country became independent in 1965, with voters electing 61 Members of Parliament and 609 Local Council seats.
This is Jonathan’s fifth AU election observation mission since 2015, with past missions in Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Since stepping down as Nigeria’s president in 2015, Jonathan has also led election observation missions for other organizations, including the Commonwealth, ECOWAS, WAEF, Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), and International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP).
