Police NSCDC officer Osogbo

A troubling incident unfolded in the Elizabeth Housing Estate, located in Osogbo, Osun State, when officers from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) violently confronted a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The officer, identified as Owoeye, was assigned to the estate to provide security for its residents.

A source familiar with the situation reported that the police initially arrived at the estate the previous night to make arrests. However, Owoeye requested that the officers show an arrest warrant, which led them to leave without taking any action. According to the source, the police aimed to arrest residents who had allegedly failed to pay sex workers after a recent encounter.

The following day, the police returned with an arrest warrant and encountered Owoeye again. He insisted on speaking to his superior before allowing the officers to enter the estate. This decision angered the police, who were reportedly frustrated by Owoeye’s request for further authorization.

Footage from the scene showed Owoeye, armed with a rifle, being attacked by a police officer while other officers attempted to separate them. In one video, an unidentified resident, who was bleeding from a head injury sustained during the altercation, described his experience. “I was coming from the estate when I saw the police harassing the NSCDC officer. I asked my boy to record what was happening,” he explained. “They put handcuffs on him and tried to drag him away, but the estate management insisted he not be arrested. After a while, they returned with reinforcements and began beating everyone in the estate.”

Another resident filming the incident commented, “They were beating him; ten of them against one person. They handcuffed him and held his legs while intimidating him because there were so many of them.”

Attempts to reach Adeleke Kehinde, the spokesperson for the Osun State NSCDC Command, for comment faced difficulties due to poor network reception. Subsequent attempts to contact her went unanswered. According to sources, Owoeye has been detained at the police headquarters in Osogbo since Wednesday.

When approached for comment, Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, confirmed that an NSCDC officer from the estate was indeed in their custody. Initially, she stated that the officer was arrested after being obstructive. However, upon reviewing video evidence of the incident, she expressed surprise at the violent nature of the confrontation and indicated that she would forward the footage to the Commissioner of Police for further investigation and potential disciplinary action against the involved officers.
