Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Botchwey Appointed Commonwealth Secretary-General

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has been named the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, an organization of 56 nations, many of which are former British colonies.

The announcement came during a summit held in Samoa on Saturday, where conversations also turned to the topic of colonial reparations.

Botchwey, who has been Ghana’s foreign minister for seven years, was chosen from three candidates, all of whom urged the UK to acknowledge and address the lasting effects of colonialism and slavery. Notably, Botchwey has represented Ghana on the UN Security Council, a role ending in December 2023, and has strongly advocated for a free trade agreement across Commonwealth countries.

The Secretary-General position, which rotates among regions, was scheduled to be filled by a representative from Africa this term. Botchwey succeeds Baroness Patricia Scotland of Dominica.

In a social media post following her appointment, Botchwey expressed gratitude, stating, “Truly humbled by the overwhelming support of the Commonwealth Heads of Government in selecting me as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth… The work indeed lies ahead!”

The Commonwealth, led by King Charles III, aims to promote democratic governance, trade, education, climate action, and financial transparency. Botchwey’s appointment was confirmed at the Samoa summit, which initially centered on climate change but also included passionate discussions about reparations for the colonial era.
