List of Nigerian Governor’s Sets To Pay Above ₦70,000 Minimum Wage
Several state governors in Nigeria have announced new minimum wage packages for civil servants, surpassing the ₦70,000 benchmark set by the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu.
This move follows negotiations between the Federal Government and organized labor unions to address workers’ welfare amid economic challenges.
Below is a breakdown of the states and the newly approved minimum wage by them:
- Lagos State – ₦85,000
On October 16, 2024, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for civil servants in Lagos State. Sanwo-Olu noted that the wage increase was in response to the high cost of living in Lagos and expressed his administration’s intention to further raise it to ₦100,000 by January 2025.
- Rivers State – ₦85,000
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State followed suit, approving ₦85,000 as the new minimum wage on October 18, 2024. This adjustment underscores the state’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
- Enugu State – ₦80,000
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State announced a new minimum wage of ₦80,000. During the announcement, Mbah emphasized his administration’s dedication to workers’ welfare, stating that the increase took immediate effect following a report from a special committee.
- Akwa Ibom State – ₦80,000
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for civil servants. The state government constituted an implementation committee chaired by the Head of Civil Service, Effiong Essien, with a mandate to deliver its report within a month.
- Niger State – ₦80,000
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, also approved ₦80,000 as the new minimum wage for civil servants in the state, aligning with the trend of increased wage packages.
- Delta State – ₦77,500
The Delta State Government announced a minimum wage of ₦77,500 to be paid starting from the end of October 2024. Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, confirmed this at a meeting with organized labor representatives.
- Ogun State – ₦77,000
Governor Dapo Abiodun approved a minimum wage of ₦77,000 on October 15, 2024. The announcement was made in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi.
- Kebbi State – ₦75,000
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State approved a minimum wage increase to ₦75,000 for civil servants on October 23, 2024. The announcement was confirmed by the state’s NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman.
- Ondo State – ₦73,000
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State announced a wage increase to ₦73,000 on October 12, 2024. The governor made the announcement during his campaign to highlight his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
- Kogi State – ₦72,500
Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State approved ₦72,500 as the new minimum wage. The governor also announced a one-year suspension of the tax burden on the increased sum.
- Gombe State – ₦71,500
Gombe State Governor Muhammad Yahaya agreed to a new minimum wage of ₦71,500 following negotiations with the Nigeria Labour Congress. The agreement was signed on October 15, 2024.
These announcements indicate a wave of increased wages across several states, aiming to cushion the impact of inflation and enhance the living standards of civil servants. The governors have expressed their commitment to the welfare of workers, acknowledging their critical roles in state development.
