Betta Edu Is Gone – Presidency (Video)

The Presidency has officially confirmed that Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, will not be returning to President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

The announcement on the exit of Betta Edu by the presidency came from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on October 27, 2024.

This follows a recent cabinet reshuffle where President Tinubu dismissed five ministers and nominated seven new ones pending Senate approval. The reshuffle also included the scrapping of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the Sports Development Ministry. The President merged the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, and established the Ministry of Regional Development to oversee regional development commissions like the NDDC, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

Onanuga, who provided details of the changes during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, addressed public speculation about Edu’s position. Her suspension in January over an alleged scandal in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs left many wondering if she would be reinstated.

Edu, the former Commissioner for Health in Cross River State, was suspended alongside Halima Shehu, CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA), following allegations of financial misconduct in the ministry. President Tinubu had directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the ministry’s financial dealings.

Despite public interest in the EFCC’s findings, there has been no official statement on the investigation’s outcome or Betta Edu’s fate by the presidency—until now. Addressing these questions, Onanuga confirmed Edu’s removal from the cabinet.

“Edu is gone,” he stated. “She was suspended in January, and this is October. Her position has been taken by someone else—Nentawe Yilwatda from Plateau State.”

Pressed further to clarify, Onanuga reiterated that Edu’s time in the administration had ended. “There is no more place for her in this cabinet,” he emphasized.
