Nigerian social media commentator, Daniel Regha, has weighed in on Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman’s appearance at the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, expressing his dissatisfaction with the player’s outfit choice.

Daniel Regha made his intervention after Ademola Lookman made headlines for being ranked the 14th best player in the world at the prestigious awards event in Paris. He opted for a classic suit for the event. While many praised his sleek look, Daniel Regha had a different take on the matter of Ademola Lookman’s outfit.

Taking to social media, Regha suggested that the Atalanta forward should have donned a traditional Nigerian or African-inspired outfit to promote the country’s rich cultural heritage on such a global stage. He drew comparisons to Senegalese football star Sadio Mane, who in 2022 turned heads at the Ballon d’Or ceremony by wearing an outfit inspired by his Senegalese roots.

“Ademola Lookman should’ve worn a traditional inspired outfit to the Ballon d’Or ceremony, to promote our culture & heritage; Just like Sadio Mane did in 2022. He looks good in his suit, but would’ve been a standout rocking any clothing that incorporates Nigeria or African designs,” Regha tweeted.

Some netizens agreed with his stance, arguing that representation through traditional attire adds an important layer to African recognition on the world stage. Others, however, felt that the choice of outfit remains a personal preference and does not necessarily equate to one’s pride in their heritage.

Ademola Lookman’s ranking at the Ballon d’Or marks a significant milestone for the player, following a standout season that earned him global recognition. Lookman’s achievements were celebrated back home in Nigeria, with many fans and pundits acknowledging his remarkable progress.
