A wave of apprehension is sweeping across Nigeria as men increasingly fear for their safety amid a disturbing trend of murders allegedly carried out by women.

The hashtag #StopKillingUs has gained traction online, as men take to social media to express growing anxiety, calling for protection and attention to what they are labeling as “androcide”—the targeted killing of men.

The latest alarm was sparked after the case in Auchi, Edo State, where a young woman, Peculiar, allegedly poisoned and killed four men and a woman in an incident that has since gone viral. This incident comes shortly after the shocking murder of Christianah Idowu by Adeleye last month. Public figures, including a popular female singer Ayra Starr, had openly called for justice against men killing women.

Adding to the climate of unease, a video surfaced online just days ago showing a woman allegedly abusing a seven-year-old boy. In light of these recent incidents, many Nigerian men are expressing a profound sense of vulnerability, narrating personal fears and recounting near-encounters with hostile behavior. One user stated, “We’re no longer safe… we’re shaking,” reflecting the rising sentiment across social platforms.

Despite the concerns voiced by men, some commentators have downplayed the issue. Male feminists and other online voices have come forward defending the actions of women in certain cases, sparking backlash and accusations of insensitivity.

Though statistics show femicide rates surpass androcide globally, Nigerian men argue that these incidents highlight an urgent need for attention to their safety. As the conversations on #StopKillingUs continue to trend, Nigerian men are calling for societal acknowledgment of their vulnerability and a call to action to address these rising incidents of violence.
