Controversy Trails As Nigerian Police Detain VeryDarkMan
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has reported that Martins Vincent Otse, a social media critic known as VeryDarkMan, has been detained by the Nigerian Police.
This development follows VeryDarkMan’s recent public apology for wearing a police uniform in a viral video.
In a post shared on the social media platform X, Adeyanju explained that VeryDarkMan was detained on Thursday night after he responded to a police invitation. He wrote, “Our client, VDM has been detained after honoring a police invitation just like yesterday. VDM who has been consistent in saying the Nigerian Police are our friends even when we all know they are not.”
The detention comes after VeryDarkMan posted an apology video acknowledging his mistake in wearing a police uniform. The Nigerian Police Force had criticized him for the inappropriate use of their uniform and initiated an investigation.
In the video, VeryDarkMan humorously referred to himself as the “Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) of the Online Division,” which stirred controversy. Following the backlash, he released an apology, admitting he regretted wearing clothing similar to a police uniform and advised Nigerians to seek proper permission before wearing such attire to avoid potential issues.
After his police station visit, VeryDarkMan stated, “Back from the police station where I was interrogated based on the post I made wearing a costume that the police claim is similar to theirs. I didn’t intend to impersonate the police in any way and I tender my unreserved apologies to the Nigeria police force and the office of the Inspector General of Police.”
