CSOs Want Action Against Lawmaker Who Assaulted Abuja Bolt Driver

A coalition of more than 80 Civil Society Organizations, CSOs has condemned an assault by Nigerian lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja.

The response of the CSOs came after the incident, which occurred on Sunday, October 27, 2024 that came with the video that showed Ikwechegh verbally and physically attacking Abuwatseya.

The CSOs have thus demanded that Ikwechegh face the full weight of the law, both through criminal prosecution and disciplinary action from the House of Representatives. They expressed concern over the lack of immediate condemnation from other elected officials and the National Assembly, calling for Ikwechegh’s suspension pending further investigation.

The statement emphasizes the coalition’s insistence on equal treatment under the law, as enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution. The groups argue that incidents like this perpetuate a culture where political elites are above the law, while ordinary citizens face intimidation and injustice.

Among the coalition’s demands are:

  1. Full criminal prosecution of Ikwechegh by the Nigerian Police and Ministry of Justice, without any special treatment.
  2. An immediate suspension of Ikwechegh by the House of Representatives, in line with parliamentary rules.
  3. Assurance of safety for Abuwatseya from further intimidation and a transparent process allowing him to file a formal complaint.
  4. The involvement of the National Human Rights Commission to oversee the case and ensure justice is upheld without bias.

The coalition further highlighted the importance of reforming Nigeria’s justice system, citing abuses of power and the prevalence of unjust detention as urgent issues.

The civil society organizations, which include Amnesty International Nigeria, BudgIT, Enough is Enough, and Yiaga Africa, affirmed their commitment to amplifying the voices of Nigerian citizens and pushing for accountability within the government.
