Gov Otti Borrows Fubara’s Script As Abia Holds LG Polls
By Emmanuel Aziken
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has borrowed the script of Governor Simi Fubara of neighbouring Rivers State in advancing his political interests in this Saturday’s local government election.
GWG.ng reports that like Fubara, Otti is in discord with the reconised national leadership of Labour Party with Barrister Julius Abure as national chairman.
Otti hosted the recent meeting of Labour Party stakeholders which led to the emergence of Senator Esther Usman as the acting national chairman of the party following the multiple controversies around Abure.
The dissolution of the Abure led national leadership by Otti, Peter Obi and other stakeholders was, however, overturned by the court which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to recognize him as national chairman.
The development put Otti on the spot as under the laws he needed Abure to endorse candidates to contest on the banner of Labour Party in the Abia local government election. The development led those being supported by Otti to seek refuge in the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP.
It would be recalled that Governor Fubara in neighbouring Rivers State was also prompted by the crisis in his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to sponsor candidates for the local government election on the platform of the Action Peoples Party, APP, a new political party.
Governor Otti like Fubara who maintains his faithfulness to the PDP is also pledging fidelity to Labour Party, even if not in this Saturday’s local government election.
GWG.ng reports that the governor’s decision has not stopped the Labour Party from fielding candidates. However, the party is not expected to make any serious impact in the election that has the PDP as the major contender to the ZLP.
The other parties in Abia that are contesting the local government election include the YPP and the NNPP. The All Progressives Congress, APC is not contesting the elections despite its brewing campaign to challenge Otti in the 2027 governorship election.
