Standstill In Edo As EFCC Arrests Accountant General, Top Officials
Just 12 days before Edo State transitions to a new government, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the state’s Accountant General, Julius Anelu, and three other top officials over allegations of misappropriating a N5 billion agricultural loan.
Sources confirmed that the arrests took place on Thursday, with the detained Edo officials remaining in EFCC custody in Benin as of Friday night. Reports suggest they may be transferred to Abuja on Saturday for further investigation into the alleged financial misconduct.
The detained officials, who were originally invited for a briefing, were subsequently held, a source disclosed. Their arrests have led to a near standstill in government operations, as access to state funds has been impacted by the absence of key signatories to government accounts.
This development comes at a critical juncture as the state government prepares to hand over to the incoming administration. The arrests have raised concerns about potential administrative disruptions, especially in light of the ongoing transition.
“They were arrested over a five billion naira agricultural loan on Thursday and are still in EFCC custody as of Friday night. We hear they may be moved to Abuja on Saturday,” a government house source confirmed.
With just days left before the new administration’s inauguration, the unfolding investigation into alleged financial irregularities is likely to impact both the current and incoming governments in Edo State.
