Bayelsa State’s Commissioner for Ijaw National Affairs, and Pere of Karabiri-Mein in Bomadi, Delta State, His Highness Godspower Tam Oporoma, has dismissed claims that Ijaw culture restricts women from discussing socio-political or economic issues.

Addressing this belief, Oporoma clarified that Ijaw tradition holds no such norms barring women from speaking out on matters that affect them.

Encouraging members of the Ijaw Women Connect (IWC), he emphasized, “Don’t dampen your spirits. You have a right of association as enshrined in the constitution. Nobody can exclude you from exhibiting your endowed skills in socio-political and economic affairs.”

Dr. Vivian Dabota Ige Elenwo, President of IWC Worldwide, shared that the organization was formed to empower Ijaw women, allowing them to connect, stand together, and engage meaningfully in socio-political and economic matters.

She expressed deep gratitude for the group’s founder, Mrs. Rosemary Aken John-Oduone, praising her “unwavering dedication, leadership, and foresight” in laying the foundation for IWC’s success.

Dr. Elenwo further highlighted the organization’s achievements in empowering, advocating for, and mobilizing Ijaw women across Nigeria. She called on members to remain united and actively support their leaders in the ongoing work of the IWC.
