NIVEA Responds After NAFDAC Alert On Deodorant

Beiersdorf Nivea Consumer Products Nig. Ltd has reassured customers in Nigeria about the safety of its products after a recent alert from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

This reassurance follows NAFDAC’s warning to Nigerians to avoid using a specific Nivea product, the Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant (50ml), from batch number 93529610, due to health concerns raised by the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products.

NAFDAC, in a statement on Thursday, pointed out that the affected product contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, also known as Lilial. This chemical is banned in cosmetic products in the EU due to risks of reproductive harm, potential harm to unborn children, and the possibility of causing skin irritation or burns. The agency added that the recalled deodorant batch was manufactured in Germany and is identified by the bar code number 42299882.

In response, NIVEA’s management, through its media consultant, clarified in a statement on Saturday that the affected batch has never been sold in Nigeria. “NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll On Deodorant Batch No. 93529610 Not On Sale in Nigeria,” the statement read. They explained that the product expired in January 2022, which means it was in compliance with European regulations valid at that time.

“We have been made aware of a safety alert notification issued by NAFDAC on October 31, 2024, regarding NIVEA BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant (50 ml) batch number 93529610, related to the EU’s Rapid Alert System. The batch reportedly contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA),” the statement continued. The company noted that, as of March 1, 2022, Lilial has been banned in European markets, but the batch in question had already expired and complied with regulations in place prior to that date.

Beiersdorf affirmed its commitment to consumer safety, stating, “The safety of our consumers remains our highest priority, consistent with our ethical philosophy as a business.” The statement emphasized that Beiersdorf’s NIVEA products have been reformulated to be free from Lilial in compliance with the EU’s cosmetic regulations. For instance, the NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant formula has been Lilial-free worldwide, including in Nigeria, since 2020.

The company also assured customers that it is cooperating with NAFDAC to maintain high standards in Nigeria. “Our trade partners were informed ahead of time and reminded to remove outdated Lilial-containing products within the legal timeframe to comply with the European Cosmetic Product Regulation,” the statement concluded.
