Nigerian University Staff Suspend Nationwide Indefinite Strike

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced the suspension of its nationwide indefinite strike, originally initiated over withheld salaries.

The suspension of the strike, effective from November 5, 2024, was decided after extensive discussions with government officials aimed at addressing the NASU and SSANU grievances.

The announcement was made through a circular titled “Update on Indefinite Strike Action,” signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of SSANU. The circular, distributed to all NASU and SSANU branches, instructs members to convene on November 4 to discuss the recent developments and resume work the following day.

The JAC’s strike, which began on October 28, 2024, protested the government’s failure to address months of unpaid salaries. Following high-level negotiations involving the Minister of Education, the Minister of Finance, the outgoing Minister of State for Education, the Accountant-General, and the Department of State Services, the government has now agreed to settle part of the outstanding wages. According to JAC, the government will pay two months out of the four months of withheld salaries, in a staggered format—one month by the end of October, which has mostly been disbursed, and the second month by the end of November.

The circular stated: “The National leadership of JAC commends our members across the universities and inter-university centers for their resolve and steadfast support during this industrial action. This strike, necessitated by government’s delay in meeting our demands, was never taken lightly.”

In addition to addressing the withheld salaries, discussions are also underway to resolve other pressing demands, including a N50 billion allocation for Earned Allowances, as well as the payment of arrears of 25/35 percent and a pending Wage Award. JAC stated that these issues have been revisited in its discussions with the government, and further deliberations are ongoing.

JAC leaders urged members to resume work, expressing hope that the government’s commitment will result in a lasting resolution to their demands and improve the welfare of university staff. The union leaders emphasized that they would continue to monitor the government’s actions closely and are prepared to revisit the strike if necessary.
