Breaking: Nigeria Mourns As Chief Of Army Staff Dies

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has passed away at the age of 56, following an illness.

The tragic announcement was made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing profound sadness at the loss of one of Nigeria’s top military leaders. Lt. General Lagbaja died on Tuesday night in Lagos, surrounded by family.

Lt. General Lagbaja, appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, had a remarkable career marked by dedication, valor, and a commitment to national security. Born on February 28, 1968, he entered the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992, a proud member of the 39th Regular Course.

Throughout his three-decade-long career, Lagbaja held numerous command positions, leading troops in internal security operations crucial to Nigeria’s safety. Notably, he served as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion and played critical roles in operations that included Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.

A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, demonstrating a strong commitment to military excellence. His contributions to Nigeria’s defense strategy and internal security were highly regarded and respected.

He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, who, along with the Armed Forces and the nation, mourn his passing. President Tinubu offered his heartfelt condolences, praising Lt. General Lagbaja’s dedication and expressing a wish for his eternal peace.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, signed the announcement on behalf of the presidency. The Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation remember Lt. General Lagbaja for his outstanding leadership and service, honoring his legacy as a patriot who gave his all for the country.
