A commercial bus driver set himself and a Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) official on fire while trying to avoid arrest on Tuesday.

The incident, which caused heavy traffic on the Oshodi-Apapa expressway, was confirmed by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to Taofiq, both the driver and his conductor, along with the LASTMA official, suffered severe burns during the confrontation. The injured LASTMA officer was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Taofiq provided further details of the incident: “LASMA management is aware of a distressing video showing the driver of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, with the number plate LSD 355 CK, setting both his vehicle and LASTMA officers ablaze in a brazen attempt to evade arrest.” He explained that the vehicle had been intercepted for violating traffic regulations in the Cele inward Mile 2 area. “The shocking event transpired today, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, when the driver resisted arrest with extreme aggression by LASTMA officials.”

During the arrest attempt, the driver and his conductor became violent, pouring petrol on the LASTMA officers and physically attacking them. Taofiq confirmed that the LASTMA official who was injured in the attack was taken to the hospital immediately.

LASTMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety and order on Lagos roads, as outlined in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. “LASTMA will not condone any form of violence or intimidation and will take firm and decisive action against those responsible,” Taofiq warned.

He also urged all drivers, especially commercial drivers, to comply with traffic regulations and respect LASTMA officers.
