US Election: Tinubu Hails America’s ‘Peter Obi’

In an official statement, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his re-election as the 47th President of the United States.

The statement, issued by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, follows an earlier mockery of Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi by one of Tinubu’s aides who compared him to Donald Trump last September.

In a post on Twitter shortly after the debate between Trump and Kamala Harris last September, the presidential aide had said:

“Peter Obi is the Nigeria version of Donald Trump. Like Obi, Trump will use the most negative epithets imaginable to describe a country he wants to lead again just to make a point and rile up his base”.

However, veering in a different mode on Wednesday after Trump claimed victory in the US election, Onanuga said:

“I look forward to strengthening the ties between Nigeria and the United States amid the complex challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world,” Tinubu said, highlighting the potential for economic cooperation, peace promotion, and joint efforts to tackle pressing global issues.

President Tinubu noted that Trump’s victory reflects the trust and confidence the American electorate holds in his leadership. He commended the American people for their commitment to democratic values, adding that Trump’s experience as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021 positions him to foster beneficial partnerships between Africa and the U.S.

Recognizing America’s significant influence on global affairs, Tinubu expressed optimism that Trump’s leadership would bring the world closer to peace and shared prosperity.
