Vice President Kamala Harris has conceded defeat in the U.S. presidential election to Donald Trump in a Washington speech setting the stage for her to crown the Republican candidate as president at the January Electoral College.
GWG.ng reports that Kamala Harris as vice-president of the country is also president of the Senate and in that position, will preside over the Electoral College which collates the state’s electoral votes for the presidential election.
The electoral college which will formally declare Trump president is expected to meet on January 6 with Kamala Harris presiding and formally proclaiming her loss, and in the same vein, the victory of Donald Trump.
GWG.ng reports that Harris, who was bidding to become the first female president, told supporters on Wednesday evening that she had spoken to Trump and congratulated him.
“Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory.
“While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fuelled this campaign,” she said.
Trump was able to regain the White House after securing victories in the key swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
GWG.ng reports that Kamala Harris difficult task in declaring her loss and the victory of Donald Trump at the electoral college is a humbling task that is not unusual.
Al Gore as vice-president in 2001 sat over the electoral college that proclaimed George Bush as winner of the 2000 presidential election.
Richard Nixon as vice president in January 1961 presided over the electoral college that declared John Kennedy winner of the 1960 presidential election.
