CSOs Protest Against NNPC, Dangote Refinery Spat At NASS

A group of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) held a protest at the National Assembly on Friday, raising concerns about the ongoing conflict between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery.

The protesters argued that the deadlock between the two entities is negatively impacting Nigerians, especially in terms of fuel availability and pricing.

The CSOs emphasized the urgent need for NNPCL to follow President Bola Tinubu’s directive, which requires the company to supply crude oil to Dangote Refinery in Naira. They explained that complying with this order would improve local refining capacity, reduce the country’s reliance on imported petroleum products, and help stabilize fuel prices.

In August 2024, the coalition had announced plans to set up a situation room to monitor NNPCL’s compliance with the directive. This move demonstrated their commitment to ensuring that the corporation adheres to the President’s instructions. The protest also raised broader issues within Nigeria’s oil sector, such as the ongoing inactivity of government-owned refineries and the country’s continued dependence on fuel imports.

The CSOs called for comprehensive reforms in the oil industry, stressing the need for transparency and better protection of the interests of Nigerian citizens. The protest highlighted the growing public frustration with the state of the oil sector and the perceived lack of progress in addressing its long-standing issues.
