The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a range of measures to enhance the data experience of telecom consumers while addressing billing transparency and promoting awareness of data usage.

Speaking at the 93rd edition of the Telecom Consumer Parliament (TCP) in Abuja, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, outlined the Commission’s plans to improve consumer satisfaction in the evolving telecommunications landscape.

Maida emphasized the transformation of telecommunications in Nigeria over the past two decades, noting the transition from basic voice services to high-speed data-powered innovations like e-commerce, online banking, and social media. He highlighted the significant growth in data consumption, revealing that in 2024, Nigeria’s daily data usage averaged 336 gigabytes per second—a 39% increase from the previous year.

Despite this progress, Maida acknowledged widespread concerns about perceived data depletion. He attributed these issues to factors such as the advent of high-resolution devices and improved technologies, which naturally consume more data. He noted that while NCC audits of billing systems reported no major discrepancies, consumer perceptions persist, fueled by complex operator tariffs and rising data consumption demands.

To address these challenges, Maida detailed initiatives including a Joint Industry Campaign on Consumer Awareness for smarter data usage, which educates consumers on managing data more effectively. He explained that features like tracking data usage and setting limits on smartphones can empower users to optimize their consumption.

Additionally, Maida revealed that the NCC has issued a Guidance on Tariff Simplification, requiring telecom operators to provide clear and accessible information about data plans and pricing. Operators are expected to implement these guidelines soon, presenting consumers with detailed tariff plans and billing rates.

The NCC also aims to address broader industry challenges such as vandalism and theft of telecom infrastructure. Maida highlighted the recent Presidential Order signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which designates telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure, granting stronger protections against vandalism and unauthorized access.

Further initiatives include the introduction of coverage maps to help consumers assess network strength across the country and the implementation of Major Incident Reporting Guidelines, which will require operators to inform consumers about significant network incidents.

Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to a consumer-centric approach, Maida called for collaboration among all stakeholders in the telecom value chain to ensure consistent service quality. He concluded by expressing confidence in achieving a telecommunications ecosystem where Nigerian consumers enjoy world-class services, remain informed, and feel valued.
