Your True Nigerian Identity Cannot Be Erased – Kemi Badenoch Told

Former Senator Shehu Sani has made subtle criticisms directed at Kemi Badenoch, the newly elected leader of the UK Conservative Party, over her remarks about Nigeria. Sani suggested that expressing loyalty to a foreign country does not erase one’s true origins.

He remarked, “No matter how much and how long an adopted child loves his new home and hates his ancestral home, there will come a day he or she will be reminded by his adopted home that he doesn’t belong there.”

Sani added, “If African-Americans are still reminded that they belong to Africa, a Nigerian singing the colonial song in the UK parliament will not change his or her true identity,” in a post on X.

GWG.ng reports that Badenoch had previously defended British colonialism during a debate on the UK’s response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Additionally, she has been criticized for making disparaging comments about Nigeria.

Recently, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, mentioned that her office tried reaching out to Badenoch without success. Speaking on Channels Television, Dabiri-Erewa clarified that Nigeria would not pressure the British politician into embracing her Nigerian heritage if she chose not to.

“It depends on whether she embraces her Nigerian identity. We reached out to her once or twice, but there was no response. We don’t force anyone to acknowledge being Nigerian,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
