NCC Commends FG For Declaring Telecom Infrastructure Critical National Assets

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commended the federal government for designating telecommunication infrastructure as critical national assets, a move expected to bolster the sector’s security and operational efficiency.

President Bola Tinubu issued the declaration through a presidential order in July 2024. Speaking at the 93rd Telecom Consumer Parliament in Abuja, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, described the announcement as pivotal for addressing vandalism and unauthorized access to telecom facilities. He noted that these issues have hampered operators’ ability to deliver quality services to consumers.

Dr. Maida acknowledged the challenges operators face, including rising operational costs due to the country’s macroeconomic situation. Despite these difficulties, the NCC is working with stakeholders and other arms of government to ensure the sustainability of the industry.

Highlighting the sector’s growth, Dr. Maida revealed that Nigeria currently has 132 million internet connections, contributing to a global tally of over 5 billion users. Nigerians spend an average of 4 hours and 20 minutes daily on social media, surpassing the global average. In 2024, the country’s daily data usage reached 336 gigabytes per second, a 39% increase from the previous year. He attributed the growth to advancements such as 5G, smart cities, and the Internet of Things, which are driving digital adoption.

Addressing consumer concerns about data usage and billing transparency, Dr. Maida said the NCC has conducted audits of mobile network operators and internet service providers. Although no significant issues were found, the perception of rapid data depletion persists. To tackle this, the NCC launched a nationwide Joint Industry Campaign on Consumer Awareness, providing practical tips for optimizing data usage through various media platforms.
